Roadtrip to Las Negras

Overview

This great roadtrip will take you from Mojacar Playa along the coast to a beautiful look-out tower. From there you follow a scenic route towards Carboneras which offers great places for lunch. Then you follow the road into the 'Parque Natural del Gabo de Gata' towards Las Negras. Coming back you can drive through the 'Sea of Plastic' and come back via the Highway. Should you have time left, I recommend to visit the little town of Nijar.

Roadtrip can take between 3 and 6 hours. More information below the map.

Most important viewpoints

Mojácar Playa

  • Starting Point: Enjoy the lively beachfront of Mojácar Playa with its golden sands and clear waters.
  • What to Do: Relax at one of the beach bars or cafes, or take a quick stroll along the promenade before heading out.

Pirulico’s Tower (Torre del Pirulico)

  • Scenic Stop: Just after leaving Mojácar Playa, head towards Pirulico’s Tower—a medieval watchtower located on the rugged coastline.
  • What to See: This tower offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding cliffs. The view from the top is breathtaking, and the short hike to the tower makes it an enjoyable stop.
  • History: Pirulico’s Tower is a remnant from the times when watchtowers were used to guard against pirate attacks along the coast.

Scenic Route to Carboneras

  • After enjoying the views from the tower, continue along the scenic coastal road to Carboneras. Stop at Mirador de la Granatilla.
  • Carboneras: A charming fishing town where you can stop for lunch. Consider trying the local seafood at one of the beachfront restaurants.
  • What to Do: After lunch, you can explore Playa de los Muertos, one of the most famous beaches in Spain, located just outside the town.

Parque Natural del Cabo de Gata-Níjar

  • After Carboneras, the road takes you into the Cabo de Gata Natural Park. This area is famous for its wild, volcanic landscapes and pristine, unspoiled beaches.
  • Las Negras: Stop at this quaint village nestled in a bay surrounded by hills. Its bohemian vibe, lovely beach, and tranquil atmosphere make it a great place to relax.

Return Drive

  • After leaving Las Negras, drive through the "Sea of Plastic", the extensive network of greenhouses in Almería. This vast area, with its seemingly endless white plastic-covered fields, is a striking contrast to the natural landscapes you’ve been enjoying.

Optional stop: Níjar

  • On your way back, take a detour to the traditional town of Níjar, known for its handicrafts, especially pottery and textiles.
  • What to Do: Stroll through the town’s narrow streets, visit artisan shops, and maybe buy some local pottery or ceramics as a souvenir. It’s a peaceful and authentic Andalusian village, perfect for a quiet stop before the last leg of your trip.
